Mercyhurst CollegeI learned something the other day that really had a profound impact on me. I might be the only one in the world who has this insight, but nonetheless…

I am a non-traditional student at Mercyhurst College, as some of you know. And what I want to share has nothing at all to do with academics, but more a thought process. When the college was built, it had long, beautiful yards and landscaping. A lot of grass between buildings, stuff like that. They didn’t put any walkways in initially. The reason - they were going to let the students determine where the sidewalks needed to be!

So at the end of every school year, the administration takes a walk around the campus and finds the paths ‘most traveled.’ Then they get the contractor to put a sidewalk in place of the paths through the grass.

To me, this is how any good business needs to work their magic. Business plans are going to be altered, marketing will be changed, but at the end of the day it is the customers who count. Don’t tell them how to do something because they will make their way to your competitor. Instead, let them carve their own path. Your job is just to reinforce it.
