Lately, I have been pretty interested in the concept of “Six Degrees of Separation.” A wikipedia definition says that “human beings are connected through relationships with at most six other people.”

What exactly does that mean?

To break it down, if you want to get a letter to Michael Jordan, in theory, you are no more than six people away from making a successful delivery. Typically what happens is you give the letter to a friend, who gives it to one of their friends, and so on. Eventually, the letter ends up in the hands of a ‘highly connected’ person, who hands it to Jordan.

This concept is in itself pretty powerful. To think that any one individual is no more than six people away from me! It almost makes you want to go out and meet everyone!

Insert blogging and the wall falls down..

Now think about the immediacy of blogging.. the instant gratification. When I write a comment on an author’s site, chances are they will read it and a lot of them will respond. And if they don’t allow comments, then they will surely let some emails through. Now, that six degree barrier is almost non-existent. How about .5 or maybe 1!

Blogging is power

So how well are bloggers networked? Well, who is really to say… Bloggers have a voice, and that voice is growing. I think that a lot of it is in relation to breaking down that wall of separation. Not only can we read first-hand what an author writes, but now we can have an immediate reaction.

That is power you can’t buy..
