Gizmodo has an interesting article on Vista’s Aero and how it absolutely crushes notebook batteries.
It seems that reports have been surfacing from ZDNet and other publications that Aero is a little intense on its power consumption. It seems the new 3D graphics engine is needs a jolt just to run properly.
In my own experience, this is completely true. In fact, on my laptop I have been running Ubuntu Feisty Fawn to combat the experience. Running Vista all out means 1.5 hours of battery life on a new Toshiba, while Ubuntu usually allows me 4 hours or so.
Even before I upgraded to Vista, XP was giving me about 3.5 hours. Is that sort of performance decrease enough to warrant the extra functionality that Vista offers?
Well, in my opinion, the jury is still out. I am liking Ubuntu’s beta though!
