In my opinion, Ubuntu is the absolute nicest Linux distro on the planet.  Fedora is right up there as well.  The problem for most casual users is that installation process though.  If you don’t set up your hard drive right, it can be a pain in the ass to partition your existing Windows based hard drive.

That is where Wubi comes in.  Wubi is a windows based installer, and puts Ubuntu right into a folder on your normal Windows hard drive.  It installs no different than your normal programs.  It also uninstalls with the same simplicity!

This isn’t a virtual machine.  You still have to reboot your computer in order to get into Ubuntu, but it makes the installation process nice and simple.  The project is independent of Ubuntu, but the developers hope that the Linux Distro will adopt their painless style sooner or later.

You should seriously check out Ubuntu.  It is a great operating system and for normal everyday operations.  In fact, the only reason I am still on Windows some of the time is because the college I attend uses Microsoft products consistently.  It is easier to do things in MS Word (like formatting, powerpoints) and know how they will come up on other computers that it is the do everything in Open Office and take the chance.
