Skyfire - The Better Mobile Browser

When I got my Motorola Q almost two years ago, I was so excited that I could troll through emails and RSS feeds while waiting for clients or lunch at a restaurant. The thought of being always connected fascinated me. I could finally get caught up on my lacking feed reading habits and actually leave the office for a change!

For the most part, the Q has served my needs very nicely. The one things that doesn’t live up to all the hype though, is the web browser. Before I picked up my Morotola, I was playing with my friends Blackberry which would let you surf relatively pain free. You could click on links, see ad blocks, and do all the other things you can do on a normal Internet browser. Not the case on my phone.

Being that there is such a disconnect on mobile web browsers, I have been waiting for someone to step up and fill the need. Not only do I need something more feasible, but the millions of Q users do too. So when I read about Skyfire, I immediately put my request in for the beta!

Skyfire is a revolutionary new mobile browser that I think will make serious waves in the industry. It’s intuitive, full screen, and looks as if you are viewing pages right through your PC. I can’t wait to try it out!

For now though, here is the YouTube vid. I guess all we can do is wait :0)

Backup Your Instant Messages

Here’s a nifty little tool for the web worker - IM History.  IM History allows you to back up your instant messages from Skype, Yahoo, ICQ, QIP, Trillian, AIM and others.

What this means for you is the ability to go back and check who said what and when.  I have used it as a defense when outsourced work groups go horrible wrong or client expectations aren’t ‘met’ as was previously agreed upon.

For instance, if you promise to author an ebook and deliver the final product, they can’t come back and say, “You told me you’d do the cover too!”  Oftentimes in situations like that, I do the cover to make them happy, but I know that that wasn’t the case…

MailStore.com - Email Backups

Unfortunately, the life of an information worker is largely comprised of email.  Whether its through a web interface, your desktop, or a mobile device; email is our constant communication medium.

One thing about email is you take it for granted.  You save all your pieces of information amongst their various folders in Outlook or Thunderbird, going back to them whenever need be.  They provide you comfort because in the end, you always have the documentation to hold up one claim or another.

But what if it disappears?  What if all of your emails are gone?

MailStore.com has your answer.  It is a freeware, desktop utility that allows you to export your email to another drive or server, and will even let you burn your backups to a disc.

Now, I know Outlook will allow you to do the same thing if you are savvy with exporting, but it’s a pain in the ass.  Why not just have it done automatically?

The GPhones Debut

GPhoneLately, there is a lot of talk over Google’s wireless ambitions.  They are trying to secure a wireless frequency, they just got a patent approved for credit card transactions over their mobile plans, and they have an open source OS for handhelds.  Everything sure does point to the launch of a mobile device, doesn’t it?

TechCrunch did a little piece on Google powered phones, and hypothesizes that Google has one in the making which might be launched at the Mobile World Congress expo.  Apparently, Google has booked two tables and I don’t suppose they are for their search capabilities…

It is interesting to watch a company that has more money than God, and has more intelligence than Microsoft.  They consistently build and purchase, hoping to create some sort of sustainability from their brand.  I think it’s working so far, but it will be interesting to see what the next 10 years brings.

It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day operations at most businesses.  Have you ever asked yourself, “What did I do today?”  Ever been surprised by the response?

Here are some tips to help you through the workday:

  • Wake up early
  • Get some morning exercise
  • Create a fixed to do list
  • Isolate yourself
  • TV, web, facebook, and instant messengers go offline during the day.
  • Do the most important things first
  • Don’t take mid task breaks (I don’t agree with this one).
  • Break minimally
  • Batch small tasks
  • Do the important things, not just the urgent things.
  • Take a day off
